Highlights
Peru Ancestral Paths will begin the Salkantay Trek 4 Days with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 4:30 am. We’ll provide you with breakfast before starting the hike to Soraypampa.
We will have lunch in Soraypampa. Then we’ll climb to the ethereal Humantay lake or Laguna Humantay. Take time to explore and discover the high andean birds that call the lake home.
The uphill hike will continue for 2 more hours to arrive at Salkantay Pampa. In this plain field will be our first camp. Before Sunset we will set camp and prepare for the night.
Day two is the most challenging, so prepare! You will start early with hot coca tea or coffee (you’ll need an extra bus of energy), and breakfast. The first hike of the day will be uphill .
On this day we’ll cross the Salkantay Pass, the heist point of the Salkantay Trail (4,630 m/15,190 ft). Here the views are magnificent. You’ll be the closest to the Salkantay Mountain.
We’ll take a break before continuing to Huayrac Machay. This will be the place for the lunch stop. We’ll hike another 3 hours till we reach Collpapampa town. Here we’ll have dinner and sleep for the night.
For day 3, after breakfast we’ll walk to Lucmabama. It will take around 3 hours.
Here we’ll learn how to cook Pachamanca. A traditional dish cooked in holes in the ground. This is a hands-on experience.
After lunch we will visit an organic coffee plantation. You’ll learn about the farming process, and of course, you will sample some fresh espresso.
After that we’ll take a bus to the Hydroelectric Station. From here we’ll wall next to the train rails to Aguas Calientes. It will take from 2 to 3 hours. But we’ll arrive probably before the sunset to Machu Picchu Pueblo.
That night you’ll have dinner in a restaurant and sleep in a hotel.
Today is the best day. We’ll rise in the morning for the last breakfast of your journey. You can choose if you want to hike to Machu Picchu or you want to take the bus (12 USD extra per person).
If you wish to hike you will have to wake up earlier. At the end the group will reunite at the Machu Picchu Gate by 6:00 am.
You’ll enjoy the guided visit to Machu Picchu. Take pictures in all the iconic places, learn about the most significant archaeological site in South america. You have some extra time to visit on your own.
The time we go back to Agua Calientes depends on your return route. It also changes if you booked the Huayna Picchu Climb (must book in advance, includes extra charge).
If you want to return by bus. You’ll have to hike all the way back to the Hydroelectric Station. This means we can be on Machu Picchu until 11:30 am.
We can stay at Machu Picchu a little longer if you return by train (12 USD extra charge). The train departs in the evening and it takes like 3 hours to arrive at Cusco. You can take things easy and explore Aguas Calientes.
The bus route takes 6 hours plus 2 hours of additional hike.
Either way you’ll be in Cusco in a dropping point (Plaza Regocijo) by night.
Ensure you are in good physical condition. The trek reaches high altitudes, making breathing more difficult. Acclimatize in Cusco for at least two days to prevent altitude sickness.
The ideal months to undertake the Salkantay Trek are from April to October. These months offer clearer skies and milder weather. Avoid the rainy season from November to March, as trails can be slippery and dangerous.
Respect the environment. Carry out all trash and keep the trail clean. Stick to the campsite and trail limits to minimize your impact.
Remember that you won’t be allowed entrance to Machu Picchu Sanctuary if you don’t show your passport. So don’t forget it. The passport number in the ticker reservation must be the same in your passport. So if there is a mistake, notify this immediately to Peru Ancestral Paths.
