Itinerary

Day 1Palccoyo Mountain Tour

In the early morning our private transportation will pick you up. We’ll take the highway from Cusco to Puno for 2 and a half hours. We’ll arrive to the town of Sicuani to take a delicious breakfast.

After breakfast we’ll continue our bus ride. We’ll take the detour highway to Arequipa until Layo, a village next to a beautiful lake. After some more minutes on the bus, we’ll be on the trailhead. Here the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain tour starts.

We’ll hike uphill for one and a half hours. The Mountains Apu Taqllo and Pallay Puncho will stand next to us. The ascent is the hardest part of the day trip. The elevation gain won’t be that drastic, but the hike is challenging.

Onec in the summit of the Pallay Puncho mountain, you will have an incredible view of colorful mountains. The colors of this mountain are different from the ones in Vinicunca. The rainbow mountains in Peru are  unique in their own right.

From this point we also have a visit to Layo Lake. You’ll have enough time to take all the pictures you want, soak in the views and rest before the return.

Our return will start with the descent. We may encounter alpacas and llamas nearby. We’ll go back on the bus once we reach the base. There is one last stop in Layo Lake to appreciate this high altitude lake.

Once in Sicuani, again, we’ll have lunch. Then, continue the return. We’ll be in Cusco by night, at around 8:00 pm. That will be all in our Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain hike.

Useful Information

Information

Before you embark on the Palccoyo Mountain Tour, consider the high altitude. Starting at 4,700 meters(15,420 ft), the trek reaches up to 4,900 meters (16,076 ft).

High altitude may cause sickness. Please, acclimatize in Cusco for a few days first. You will have to be ok with the high in Cusco before attempting a hike at even more altitude.

The Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain tour offers clearer views during the dry season from May to October. This period is ideal for your visit. Just have in mind, this is also the more popular season and there will be more crowds.

Wear appropriate hiking gear and bring water and snacks. Weather at Palccoyo can change quickly. Prepare for both sun and potential rain.

Safety is a priority; follow all guidelines your tour guide provides. Listen carefully to safety briefings, especially concerning weather and terrain conditions.

The tour is generally easy, but the altitude makes it challenging. Assess your fitness honestly before booking the Palccoyo Mountain Tour. This will ensure a more enjoyable and safe experience.

Peru Ancestrals Paths won’t allow children under 2 years and travelers older than 55 years old. We hardly don’t recommend this tour for people with asthma, hipertension or cardiac conditions.
