Our trek starts early, and you’ll reach the top of Pallay Punchu Peru after a challenging yet rewarding hike. 

The mountain is located in the Cusco region, roughly a four-hour drive from the city. Each step will bring you closer to the stunning views at 4,700 meters above sea level (15,420 ft). We recommend a trekking pole to navigate the terrain comfortably. 

The Pallay Punchu Mountain, or the mountain of colors, rivals the nearby Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Ideal for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers. 

This high altitude hike is best during the dry season. You will explore Layo Lake for an extra vista of a high altitude ecosystem.

Itinerary

Day 1Pallay Punchu Peru Rainbow Mountain Hike

Really early in the morning we’ll take you to the impressive Pallay Puncho or Pallay Poncho mountain. Hotel pick up will be at 4:00 am. Our private transport will take us into a 2 and a half hours ride.

We’ll reach Sicuany town, where we’ll have breakfast. After this nutritious meal, we’ll keep going until reaching the community of Layo. In Layo, the Layo lake will be waiting for us.

The trail starting point is a little further than the  town. The hike will be extremely steep. It will take from one and a half hours to two hours. During the ascent you will have vistas of the Apu Tqllo and Pallay Puncho mountains. 

We’ll arrive at the Rainbow Mountain Pallay Punch. Reach the top, here you have an amazing view of Layo Lake. 

Here you’ll witness a mountain of colors. Here you will have ample time to explore and take pictures. Do not forget to rest before the descent.

The descent tends to be easier on the visitors. Returning to the trailhead, we’ll take the bus. We’ll make a stop to allow you to enjoy Layo Lake. 

We’ll travel the way back to Cusco. In Sicuani we’ll have lunch before continuing our way back home. We’ll arrive at Cusco around 8:00 pm.

This hike reaches a high altitude, with the summit at 4,700 meters above sea level (15,420 ft). You need preparation. Acclimatization is crucial, so spend a few days in the Cusco region beforehand. 

The best time to visit Pallay Punchu Mountain is during the dry season. From May to October, is the best season to avoid slippery paths.

Pallay Punchu, a new tourist attraction in Cusco, requires good physical condition due to its challenging terrain. Use a trekking pole for stability. 

Safety is paramount, so follow the tour operator’s guidelines and stay on marked trails. Listen to the indications of your guide. The secluded area makes medical assistance complicated.

Remember, the hike lasts about 16 kilometers round trip, taking roughly 6-7 hours. Always carry sufficient water and sun protection, as the sun can be intense at such altitudes.
