Itinerary

Day 1Cusco City Tour

The moment you arrive at Cusco Airport, one of our representatives will be there to take you to your hotel. This representative will take care of your transportation and welcome you.

Rest in your hotel and enjoy the amenities. Peru ancestral paths want you to not worry about details. At 1:30 pm we’ll go on a Cusco City Tour.

The main destination in the city center will be Koricancha. Also known as the Temple of the Sun. This ancient temple was the religious center of the Inca Empire. As a part of the structure you’ll also visit the Santo Domingo Church.

Outside the city center, we’ll be going to Saqsayhuaman. This archeological site is impressive due to the giant stones in the walls. Saqsayhuaman was a ritual place related to fertility.

From there, we’ll drive 10 minutes to arrive at Qenqo. Qenqo was also a ceremonial site. This place’s highlight is the carved ritual altar.

Puca Pucara will be our next destiny. This was a control point to the Inca Trail, when it extended through all the Inca Empire. Also this was a place for the ancient travelers to rest and replenish.

Finally, our last stop of the day will be Tambomachaya. Here you’ll see functioning fountains. This was a ceremonial place dedicated to the water.

The tour will finish after 4 hours. This Cusco and Machu Picchu Tour with Peru Ancestral Paths is just beginning. At night you can rest in your hotel.

Day 2Sacred Valley

This Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour will take you to the best of the region. At 6 – 7 am we’ll pick you up from your hotel. We’ll drive to the Sacred Valley for an hour. En route we’ll encounter the town of Chinchero.

This day trip begins with a visit to the Chinchero’s Church. A beautiful colonial building on top of an Inca base. The decor on the interior is a showcase of the andean baroque.

Also in Chinchero we’ll go to the agricultural terraces and then to the textile center. In the textile center you’ll see the textile processing of wool from llamas and alpacas.

Our next stop will be the Archeological site of Moray. Moray is known as the Inca agricultural experimentation center. The view of this place is unique because of the concentric terraces that go down the earth.

Near Moray are the Salineras, also known as the Maras Salt Mines. These mines are ancient, they date back to pre-inca times. Maras salt mines also are a unique spectacle with thousands of salt ponds.

For lunch, we’ll go to the town of Urubamba. In Urubamba we’ll enjoy a wonderful lunch buffet. All will be prepared with local products.

Everything will be fresh. You’ll enjoy a showcase of Peruvian food.

After this well deserved lunch, we’ll continue our journey. Now, we’ll be en route to Machu Picchu.

We’ll visit the Ollantaytambo archeological site. These ruins are great due to their size. Some of the structures in the inca ruins are unique.

When the visit is over, We’ll go to the Ollantaytambo train station to catch the train to Aguas Calientes.

At Aguas Calientes, a team member will be there to receive you and take you to the hotel. Overnight is at your chosen Aguas Calientes Hotel.

Day 3Machu Picchu

This is the Main day of this Machu Picchu Sacred Valley trip. We’ll begin really early with breakfast at the hotel. We’ll take the bus to the ancient citadel of the Incas. This takes around 35 minutes.

Once in Machu Picchu, we’ll go on a 2 hours tour to this 15th century Citadel. You’ll visit all the main locations. We’ll visit the Temple of the tree windows and the burial sites. The Intihuatana and more are part of the sites in our tour.

After the guided tour you’ll have time on your own to explore, rest and take photos. You can use this time to climb the Huayna Picchu mountain. To do this you will have to book in advance and pay an extra charge (75 USD each person).

By midday we’ll be back at Aguas Calientes. There you’ll have time to explore and look for Lunch. We’ll be returning to Cusco.

You have to be 30 minutes before the departure time, at the train station. We’ll arrive mid afternoon at Ollantaytambo, where private transportation will be waiting for us. After a drive of an hour and 45 minutes we’ll be in Cusco dropping you off at the hotel.

Day 4Final Airport Transfer

The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu Tour is getting to an end. You’ll take your last breakfast at the hotel. Depending on your departure time, you may have time to explore a little more the city of Cusco.

We’ll take care of your transfer to the Airport. Peru Ancestral Paths will make sure you arrive at the Airport early. We can also fix a final transfer to the Bus Station.

We hope you enjoy this sacred Valley and Machu Picchu trip.

Useful Information

Information

Before embarking on the Sacred Valley Machu Picchu tour, understand a few crucial points.

Altitude sickness is a real concern. But the first part of the trip gives you time to acclimatize in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. When you arrive at Aguas Calientes, you’ll probably be ok.

Even so, take some basic measures against altitude sickness. Drink water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Take the acclimatization days with calm. And communicate early any symptom you may have to your guide.

Safety on the route to Machu Picchu includes being cautious on uneven trails. Wear good hiking boots and always stay on marked paths.

Theft can occur, so keep valuables secure and close to your body. Despite this, Cusco is relatively safe for visitors.

The best months to visit Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are from April to October. During these months, rainfall is minimal. At these archaeological sites rain can be a problem and a liability.

Remember, Huayna Picchu requires additional tickets which sell out fast. Book these in advance.

Respect the historical sites. Do not touch or remove artifacts. Llamas and alpacas roam freely; enjoy them from a distance without feeding them.
