After that we’ll visit the Koricancha (Qoricancha or Coricancha sometimes). Its name in all its forms means Temple of the Sun. It was built before the Inca empire was completely formed. In its apogee, it was an important center for the diplomacy of the empire. Guarding the gods and idols form all the people assimilated into the Inca empire.
During the Spanish conquest this important center had to be put in service of the church. The church of Santo Domingo was built on top of it. This was a sign of the triumph of the catholic faith. But with time and the combinations of cultures, it became a symbol of the city. In the bases the andean culture, and in the top the influence of the occidental world.
Next in Our city tour, we’ll leave the historical city center. In the same route to the Sacred Valley, but not completely leaving the city. The visit to Saqsayhuaman begins. Its name means “The head of the Puma”. In Inca Times the city was puma shaped. And this complex of Sacsayhumana was its head.
The stone walls here are more ancient than the ones in Cusco’s streets. The rock bloques are giant. It’s believed that this archaeological site served as a place to pray for fertility.
On the anniversary of the city, Saqsayhumana becomes the scenario for the massive celebration of the Inti Raymi.
Our next stop is 10 to 15 minutes away. Qenqo is a temple or ceremonial place. The main structure is an altar carved in stone. This ritual place was for the Pachamama (mother earth).
Our next place is a little further way. Puca Pucara was a tambo. A tambo was a place in the Inca Trail (the original ancient net of paths) to rest and to replenish resources. Tambos were also control points. This shows the organization and functioning of the Inca empire.
The last visit of the day will be Tambomachay. 7 km away from Cusco City. This was a ceremonial place dedicated to Unu (water). This also was a tambo, but possibly one for the Inca class. This place has ancient still functioning fountains.
