Peru Ancestral Paths invites you on a mountain adventure in the best two destinations of the Andes. In the Ausangate Trek Rainbow Mountain hike, you will explore these natural wonders. This 3-day, 2-night journey will take you through the high altitude terrains of the Cusco region. 

Marvel at the colors of these amazon geological formations. You will hike to Rainbow Mountain, explore the Red Valley, and experience local communities. The Ausangate Trek is a Challenge out in one the most important snow-capped mountains in the continent.

Your tour starts from a hotel in Cusco. Prepare for breathtaking views of the andean worlds and challenging steep trails. Our expert tour guides will lead your way. Ancestral Paths, as a tour operator, makes sure your guide is well prepared and knowledgeable.

The Ausangate Trek offers an escapade into adventure and nature. Imagine walking among andean Valleys, blue small lakes and secluded andean villages. You’ll cross the Arapa Pass, witness unique weather conditions, and soak in hot springs. This is an integral and immersive experience.

Note for adventurers: Peru Ancestral Paths want you to be safe. This is not only a high altitude journey, but in a secluded area. Our tour guides are well-prepared to deal with any emergency, like altitude sickness and minor injuries. 

But for your wellbeing, we highly recommend spending at least a couple of days in lesser altitudes (Cusco, Sacred Valley, South Valley). Make sure to do this before any day trip from Cusco that is high altitude.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco to Upis, Arapa, Yanacocha

Peru Ancestral Paths starts your journey from Cusco at 4 AM. A 3-hour drive takes you to Upis. Here, you’ll enjoy your first glimpse of Ausangate, and maybe the opportunity to soak in the hot springs. 

We’ll start hiking around 8 AM. The trek to Arapa Pass takes approximately 4 hours. Expect breathtaking views of two different snow-capped mountains. 

Lunch will be at Arapa Pampa. Post-lunch, we’ll head to Yanacocha. You have another stunning view of a lagoon. This leg takes 3 hours. 

Our camp at Yanacocha awaits. Dinner will be served here. Rest well  and early. The next day will bring a lot of new challenges.

Day 2Yanacocha to Ananta, Qomer Qocha

Welcome to day 2, probably the longest. Breakfast will be at 6 AM. The trek to Ananta will start at 7 AM. 

You’ll hike for 4 hours through impressive andean landscapes. Ananta is famous for them. Lunch will be here.

Then the hike to Qomer Qocha. This 3-hour hike gives you chances of encountering interesting and diverse flora and fauna. Our camp will be near Qomer Qocha.

Our camp will be your rest spot for the day. Enjoy a filling dinner and prepare to go to sleep. The night sky here is unforgettable.

Day 3Qomer Qocha to Rainbow Mountain, Back to Cusco

We’ll rise early at 5 AM. Our breakfast will fuel you throughout the day. The hike to Rainbow Mountain will begin soon after. It’s a 3-hour journey. 

You’ll have 2 hours to explore Rainbow Mountain’ summit and its colors. We’ll start the return trek at 11 AM. 

Lunch will be on the way. A bus drive will take you back to Cusco by evening. This concludes your Ausangate Trek Rainbow Mountain hike.
